RICKSHAW IMPULSE PROJECT

__________

Premier projet de l’association :
aider les Rickshaw-Wallahs du Bangladesh à améliorer leur outil de travail.

THE ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT

What triggered the birth of this project?

The rickshaw ride trip from Dhaka to Delhi of Jean-Louis. Let him tell you everything about it.
« On one day of October 2008, I land in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the symbolic capital of rickshaws, if there were one (or taxi bicycles). I have with me Mustaffa’s contact details, a farmer living in a village who became a rickshaw driver. With him, I dive and immerse myself into the suburban popular districts and into the stunning universe of the rickshaws companies. I buy one of these bicycles to get a real view/picture of their daily lives. I go by myself, steering my rickshaw on the road of the country before I pursue my trip to India.

More

A 2700-mile trek across the Indian subcontinent from which I retain, among other facts, the abandonment of the Rickshaw-Wallahs left to their own fate: forced to pedal so hard to do one of the most painful jobs in the world, without even being considered by the authorities.
Four years later, I return to Dhaka and suggest to install gears and a chain wheel on my friend Mustaffa’s rickshaw. « That’s so great ! That’s so easy ! » he yells in a very enthusiastic tone while he gives it a first try.
But a few weeks later we realise that the bicycle chain keeps tripping out/breaking. This system/device is clearly not rickshaw friendly because of the countless bumps and potholes which scatter the streets of Dhaka.
Therefore it is necessary to invent something else to improve the working conditions of the Rickshaw-Wallahs.

THE CONTEXT

In Bangladesh, the rickshaw is more than a simple transportation.
The rickshaw is widely used in Bangladesh due to the lack of public transportation. Nowadays more than 20 millions bangladeshis would live indirectly from the rickshaw industry including more than 2 millions Rickshaw-Wallahs. It is important to put this number into perspective with the other marginalised minorities of the country which represent less than 1 million of bangladeshis. The rickshaw-wallahs rarely own their rickshaw so they wear themselves out with work and are submitted to appalling working hours in order to pay the rent of their vehicle and to make sure they receive a substantial income, which remains one of the lowest in the country.

Since the 1950s the rickshaws constituted a decorative folk art which lead them to be real and mobiles pieces of art. The Bangladeshis rickshaw is composed of an industrial cycle part and of a handcraft cart section. It weighs around 80kg and has a single speed transmission system which is inappropriate to the required efforts conditioned by the traffic and the environment. Starting the rickshaw or crossing bridges and there steep slopes is always difficult.
Since their introduction in the country in the 1930s, no improvement has been done on the rickshaws, especially concerning the transmission system, except the controversial installation of electric motors on the rickshaws in 2010. This device which consumes energy is inappropriate to the energetic context of Bangladesh. Indeed, the lack of energy in the country is recognized as an obstacle on its development.

OUR CONCERN

Our concern?
Adapt ourselves to the reality of the environment.
In the 1970s was created the OXTRIKE which is a rickshaw designed by an engineer from Great Britain. With new ergonomics and many technical innovations, some NGO think it will replace the rickshaws of southern Asia. It will never come out, stunned by the interested parties! The materials used, its method of manufacture and its technology are way far from the local economy of the rickshaw.
In 2010 emerge the electric motors on the Bangladeshis rickshaws…. A country in which the lack of energy is recognized as an obstacle on its economy… to such an extent that the local authorities banned the use of these engines since few months, starting with the region of Dhaka.

The aim of Impulse projects is to install an innovative mechanical transmission system which will help to start up the rickshaws of Bangladesh. Our main concern is to realize our project into the current economic and social organisation of the manufacture and exploitation of the rickshaw. The craftsman of the neighborhood will still solder the frame of the handmade craft part on the industrial cycle system. The manufacturer, also called “mistry”, who makes the hoops required to build the convertible hood, and the painter who decorates the rickshaws, both of them perform their tasks as they use to do it which preserve their skills and also their jobs .
Concerned by the low tech and the value analysis, which is, “to design a product at the lower cost and perfectly adapt to the needs of its user” We will make sure that the technical solutions we propose:
– Bring an improvement on the transmission system of the rickshaws
– With an affordable price
– Can be easily duplicate with local means.
– Are likely to be develop in open source

OUR STRATEGY

What is our strategy? assisting each other, sharing information and for the experience!
Impulse Projects aims at finding innovative solutions for rickshaw start assistance and installing them on the Rickshaws of Bangladesh. In order to do so, we’ve established partnerships with NGOs, associations, institutes of higher education, companies and other individuals.

We are already relying on a network of local partners that have been established through our field experience, such as Rickshaw-Wallahs, Maleks (Rickshaw owner) and NGOs working on those issues. We need to strengthen and expand our organization by building new connections with you.

The magnitude of our diverse networks and efficient members allows us to deliver the most suitable technical solutions and expertise in the producing process. With your experience and interest for our project on-hand, don’t hesitate to join us with everything you have to offer.
Our project would contribute to the local economy and revitalize the community. To do so, we request the participation of local stakeholders for the production and the installment of the new devices.

The distribution of our technical innovations can be brought about in different ways. Regarding the current field today, the rickshaw device merchants seem to be the most adequate partners to deal with and our interaction with them will therefore be a priority.

We’ve considered to entrust the installation of the devices to the mistrys (mechanics) who work in the streets on Bangladesh or in the rickshaw companies.
